Lowy Institute Podcast

The Lowy Institute podcast includes presentations by Lowy Institute staff and by visiting experts.

Through the Lowy Institute podcast you can listen to the popular Wednesday Lunch at Lowy series. Each Wednesday’s presentation is on a different topic, with a question and answer session. These are delivered by visiting experts and scholars and by Lowy Institute research staff.

The Lowy Institute Distinguished Speaker Series can also be heard. This series includes senior government ministers and officials from Australia and abroad, and internationally renowned foreign policy academics and commentators.

Occasional public lectures hosted by the Lowy Institute are also included in the podcast.

The Podcast Library contains recordings since March 2006.

What is a podcast?
A podcast is a audio program that you can subscribe to over the internet. Once downloaded, you can listen to the program on your computer or take it with you by putting the file on a MP3 player. e.g. iPod

What is the advantage of using podcasts?
Once you subscribe to a podcast, you will automatically be sent new programs. There is no need to check the internet for new episodes. The advantage a podcast has over streaming files is that a podcast may be replayed even when you are not connected to the internet.

What do I need?
All you need to get started is podcasting software. After you download and install the software, simply subscribe to the Lowy Institute Podcast podcasting URL (http://lowyinstitute.org/podcast/All.xml).

How do I subscribe to a podcast?
1. Right-click on the "Podcast" link and select Copy Shortcut. Paste into you podcasting application.

China and the world: public opinion and foreign policy
The Lowy Institute has just released its first China Poll, a wide-ranging survey of Chinese public opinion towards a number of important international policy issues. By what do the Chinese people feel threatened? How do they feel about foreign investment from Australia, Canada and the United States? Which country do the Chinese people regard as the best place to be educated and what do they think of Australia - is it a good place to visit, a country with attractive values or is it suspicious of China?

The 2009 Lowy Institute China Poll asked a broad sample of the Chinese population these questions and others. The Poll was partly funded with the generous assistance of the MacArthur Foundation as part of the Lowy Institute’s MacArthur Foundation Asia Security Project.

The 2009 Lowy Institute Poll
The fifth annual Lowy Institute Poll surveys Australian public opinion on a broad range of foreign policy issues. New questions this year cover the priority given to action on climate change, public attitudes towards relations with the US and China, foreign investment, asylum seekers, how to deal with Iran and perceptions about nuclear threats.

The Poll also repeated a number of questions asked in previous years, revealing important trends in Australian public opinion over the last five years.
