Dr Michael Wesley was the Executive Director of the Lowy Institute for International Policy, from July 2009 - August 2012. In that time Dr. Wesley built the Lowy Institute's national and international profile, bringing in substantial new research funding and made a significant contribution to Australia’s intellectual life. His book, 'There Goes the Neighbourhood: Australia and the Rise of Asia' (NewSouth Books 2011) won the 2011 John Button Prize for best writing on Australian public policy.
Previously he was Professor of International Relations and Director of the Griffith Asia Institute at Griffith University. Prior to this, he was the Assistant Director-General for Transnational Issues at the Office of National Assessments, and a Senior Lecturer in International Relations at the University of New South Wales.
Between 2007 and 2009, Dr Wesley was the Editor of the Australian Journal of International Affairs. He has served on the Australian Research Council’s College of Experts and the Queensland Art Gallery’s Board of Trustees. Dr Wesley is a Non-Resident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution and an Adjunct Professor at Griffith University and The University of Sydney.
