Sir Frank Lowy AC to deliver 2018 Lowy Lecture

The Lowy Institute is pleased to announce that the 2018 Lowy Lecture will be delivered by its Chairman, Sir Frank Lowy AC.

Sir Frank is one of Australia’s most celebrated business leaders and philanthropists. The Lowy Institute board, on extending this invitation to Sir Frank, felt that this year presented a unique opportunity for him to reflect personally on Australia’s place in the world.

It is 15 years since Sir Frank founded the Institute, with the ambition to deepen the Australian debate about foreign affairs and project Australian ideas abroad. It is also the year in which Sir Frank stepped down from his chairmanship of Westfield, the global company he co-founded in 1960.

Along with his leadership of Westfield, Sir Frank has also served in a number of other public roles, including as a member of the Reserve Bank board and Chairman of Football Federation Australia.

At his final Westfield annual general meeting in May, Sir Frank said: “I fundamentally believe that Australia's future depends on its people being open to the world. To new ideas, and to new people. And it depends on us being ambitious – as individuals and as a nation … I see Westfield, football, the Lowy Institute and many other initiatives, as part of the one integrated project. To promote Australia.”

The annual Lowy Lecture is the Lowy Institute’s flagship event at which a prominent individual reflects on the world and Australia’s place within it. Past Lowy Lecturers have included German Chancellor Angela Merkel; UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson MP; former CIA Director David Petraeus AO; News Corp Chairman Rupert Murdoch AC; Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull; and Prime Minister John Howard OM AC, who delivered the inaugural Lowy Lecture in 2005.

The 2018 Lowy Lecture and Dinner will be held on Thursday, 13 September 2018 from 7.00pm at Sydney Town Hall.

The Lowy Institute acknowledges the generous sponsorship of the event by Qantas, NAB and Capital Group.
