Trevor Wilson

Trevor Wilson retired in August 2003 after 36 years in the Australian foreign service, serving as Australian Ambassador to Myanmar (2000-03). Since October 2003 he has been a Visiting Fellow on Myanmar/Burma at the Department of Political & Social Change, College of Asia & the Pacific, and since 2004 co-convener of the ANU’s Myanmar/Burma Update Conference. He co-edited collections of the update conference papers in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2013.

Trevor Wilson spent 12 years living and working in Japan as an Australian diplomat, and speaks and reads Japanese.  His involvement with contemporary Japan covers Japanese politics, trade policy and agricultural policy from 1965-2000. He has written articles such as “A Leap into the Future: The Australia-Japan Working Holiday Agreement and Immigration Policy” published in Japanese Studies, Vol 28 No 3 (365-381), December 2008; and  “Whales apart: tensions in Japan-Australia relations” in the Asialink Essay series in March 2010.

Trevor Wilson was Project Manager at the Australia-Japan Research Centre from 2004-10, Managing Editor of the AJRC’s working paper series Asia Pacific Economic Papers and the Crawford School’s monthly APEC Economies Newsletter, and production editor of Japan's Future in East Asia and the Pacificin honour of AJRC founding Executive Director, Professor Peter Drysdale in 2007; and Laggards And Leaders In Labour Market Reform: Comparing Japan And Australia, in the Routledge Studies in the Growth Economies of Asia Series, in 2008.

Trevor Wilson was co-editor with Professor Anthony Milner of a monograph on reform of the Australian foreign service in 1984, and was also co-editor in 2008 of Steady Hands Needed, a compilation of personal accounts by former Secretaries of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
