An address by Annalena Baerbock, Foreign Minister of Germany
The Foreign Minister of Germany Annalena Baerbock gave an online address to the Lowy Institute. After her remarks, Ms Baerbock spoke in conversation with the Lowy Institute's Executive Director Dr Michael Fullilove.
Ms Baerbock is a member of the Alliance 90/The Greens party and is one of the highest profile and most interesting foreign ministers in Europe. She has been applauded for her values-driven foreign policy, her frankness when dealing with difficult geopolitical issues, and her steadfast approach to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Annalena Baerbock has been Foreign Minister of Germany since 2021, and is the first woman and youngest person to hold the position. She entered the Bundestag for the Alliance 90/The Greens party as Member for Brandenburg in 2013, and from 2018 to 2022 served as co-chair of the party. She was the Greens' candidate for Chancellor in the 2021 federal election, making her the first such candidate for the Greens and, after Angela Merkel, only the second woman to be nominated for Chancellor by a major German political party.
