Indonesia’s opposition has been emboldened by the defeat and imprisonment of former Jakarta Governor Ahok on blasphemy charges, and President Joko Widodo has responded through increasingly illiberal measures. With presidential and legislative polls due in just over 18 months, the electorate is in an increasingly nationalist and protectionist mood.

Please join us at a Sydney edition of the Indonesia Update for a discussion of the implications of these developments for Indonesian politics and economic policy, with a keynote presentation by former Indonesian trade minister Mari Pangestu. The Indonesia Update has been an annual event held by the Australian National University in Canberra since 1983; this is the twelfth time we have held an abbreviated Sydney edition.

Political Update: Tom Power, ANU
Economic Update: Raden Pardede, CReco Consulting
Keynote Presentation: Dr Mari Pangestu, University of Indonesia
Panel Discussion moderator: Aaron L. Connelly, Lowy Institute
