Event: 2014 Lowy Lecture - H.E. Dr Angela Merkel

Mon, 17 November 2014
Sydney

This year’s Lowy Lecture was delivered by Her Excellency Dr Angela Merkel, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Chancellor Merkel played a crucial role in managing the global financial crisis and is the only major leader from that time who is still serving in office. Her insights into the state of Europe and the state of the world are not to be missed.

Chancellor Merkel entered politics in 1989 after the fall of the Berlin Wall. She rose to the position of leader of her political party, the Christian Democratic Union, and in 2005 Dr Merkel became Germany's first female chancellor.

The annual Lowy Lecture is the Lowy Institute's flagship event. Each year a prominent individual reflects on developments in the world. Past Lowy Lecturers have included Rupert Murdoch AC, Executive Chairman of News Corp; Lionel Barber, Editor of the Financial Times; Dr Marius Kloppers, CEO of BHP Billiton; and Prime Minister John Howard OM AC, who delivered the inaugural Lowy Lecture in 2005.

The 2014 Lowy Lecture was held at The Westin Sydney, 1 Martin Place, Sydney on Monday, 17 November 2014 at 10.30am. It concluded at midday.

Chancellor Merkel is one of the most influential and impressive leaders on the world stage today. We are honoured that she agreed to deliver the 2014 Lowy Lecture.
