Event - Australia, China and the Pacific Islands

Tue, 12 May 2015
Sydney

Australia has long viewed itself as one of the regional leaders in the Pacific Island region, highlighted through its dominance as an aid partner. Equally, the Pacific Island region is of strategic importance for Australia in its aim to maintain regional stability. However, the dynamics of the region are changing by virtue of China’s increased involvement in trading and investment activities as well as foreign aid initiatives in the South Pacific.

On Tuesday 12 May we invite you to join us for a discussion on Australia, China and the Pacific Islands.  The Lowy Institute is hosting this event in conjunction with the Australia-China Youth Dialogue Alumni and the Australia China Young Professionals Initiative and with the support of PLN Australia.

Lowy Institute Melanesian Program Director Jenny-Hayward Jones will moderate a panel discussion with Philippa Brant, Research Associate at the Lowy Institute (and ACYD Alumnus) and Graeme Smith, Senior Research Fellow at the State, Society and Governance in Melanesia Programme, Australian National University to discuss China’s increased presence in the region, its impact on geo-politics, and what that will mean for Australia’s presence in the region.

This event is only available to Lowy Institute Corporate and Government Members, Supporters Circle and Events Subscribers, and the members of the Australia-China Youth Dialogue Alumni.
