Event: A Larger Australia

On Tuesday 8 December, the Lowy Institute will hold a panel discussion on the themes of Executive Director Dr Michael Fullilove's ABC 2015 Boyer Lectures. Joining Dr Fullilove on the panel will be novelist Anna Funder and broadcaster Tom Switzer. The discussion will be chaired by the Lowy Institute's Research Director, Anthony Bubalo.

Anna Funder is one of Australia’s most acclaimed and awarded writers. Her 2012 novel All That I Am won the Miles Franklin Prize, along with the West Australian Premier’s Prize, the West Australian Premier’s People’s Choice Prize, the Barbara Jefferis Prize, Indie Book of the Year, Indie Best Debut Fiction, the Australian Book Industry Award (ABIA) Book of the Year, ABIA Literary Fiction Book of the Year and the Nielsen BookData Bookseller’s Choice Award. Anna’s non-fiction book Stasiland, hailed as ‘a classic’, won the 2004 Samuel Johnson Prize. Both books were finalists for many international awards including the Guardian First Book Prize, the International Impac Dublin Award and the Commonwealth Writers Prize. They are international bestsellers and are published in 20 countries.

Tom Switzer, a lecturer at the University of Sydney’s United States Studies Centre, hosts Between the Lines on the ABC’s Radio National. He is a former editor at the Spectator Australia, The Australian, Australian Financial Review and the Washington-based American Enterprise Institute. Tom has written for the Wall Street Journal (US, Asia, Europe), New York Times (international), Foreign Affairs, The American Interest and The National Interest.

Michael Fullilove is the Executive Director of the Lowy Institute and the ABC 2015 Boyer Lecturer. Dr Fullilove writes widely on Australian foreign policy, US foreign policy and global issues in publications including The New York Times, Financial Times, The Washington Post, Foreign Policy, The National Interest and Foreign Affairs, as well as the Australian press. The book version of his Boyer Lectures, entitled A Larger Australia, will be published on 1 December by Penguin.
