The Lowy Institute is delighted to host the first major public address by the new Commissioner of the Australian Federal Police, Andrew Colvin. Commissioner Colvin will outline his vision for the AFP’s future, in particular, highlighting how a new approach to the AFP's longstanding engagement with international and national partners will help Australia’s law enforcement agencies protect Australia from a range of criminal and other threats.

Andrew Colvin joined the Australian Federal Police (AFP) in 1990 holding a number of portfolio responsibilities including Serious and Organised Crime, Counter Terrorism and High Tech Crime throughout his career.

Between 2002 and 2005 Commissioner Colvin was central to the AFP’s national and international response to terrorism including the 2002 Bali bombings, the 2003 Jakarta Marriott bombing and the 2004 Australian Embassy bombing. In 2003 Commissioner Colvin was awarded the Order of Australia Medal for his contribution to the Bali bombing investigation.

In 2008 Commissioner Colvin became the AFP’s first Assistant Commissioner in charge of High Tech Crime and served as AFP Deputy Commissioner for Operations (2010 to 2013), Operations Support (2013 to 2014) and National Security (2014). He holds a Masters in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government and was appointed the AFP’s 7th Commissioner on 2 October 2014.
