Special Melbourne Lecture: Ms Hu Shuli, Editor-In-Chief, Caixin Media

The Lowy Institute for International Policy is pleased to announce that Ms Hu Shuli, one of China’s most distinguished journalists, will deliver a lecture at the National Gallery of Victoria on Monday, 11 July. Ms Hu will discuss progress in and obstacles to China’s economic reform program, and the state of journalism in the current political environment of our best friend in Asia.

Ms Hu is Editor-In-Chief of Caixin Media and Dean of the School of Communication and Design at Sun Yat-Sen University in Guangdong, China. She has gained international recognition for her pioneering achievements in journalism. In 2001 she was named one of the “50 stars of Asia” by BusinessWeek, and in 2003 was awarded International Editor of the Year by the World Press Review. In 2006 the Financial Times named her one of the most powerful commentators in China. She has won a number of journalism awards, including the Louis Lyons Award for Conscience and Intergrity in Journalism from the Nieman Foundation at Harvard University (2007), the Shorenstein Journalism Award from Stanford University (2011), the Missouri Honor Medal for Distinguished Service in Journalism from the University of Missouri School of Journalism (2012) and the Ramon Magsaysay Award (2014). In 2011, she was named one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People. She has been rated one of the “top public intellectuals in the world” by Forbes Magazine and one of the “Top 100 Global Thinkers” by Foreign Policy.
