What does Xi Jinping’s ‘New Era’ mean for China and the world?

At China’s recent 19th Party Congress, the Party and President Xi Jinping announced a ‘new era of socialism with Chinese characteristics’. What does this mean for China, both domestically and globally? Join the Lowy Institute’s East Asia Program Director Dr Merriden Varrall when she hosts Professor Anne-Marie Brady of the Wilson Center and Lowy Institute Nonresident Fellow Peter Cai to discuss how the ‘new era’ will shape China’s approach to its national policies, including social and economic development, and foreign affairs. 

Anne-Marie Brady is a Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand. She is also a Global Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington DC and Non-resident Senior Fellow at the China Policy Institute at the University of Nottingham. Professor Brady is a fluent Mandarin speaker and expert in Chinese polar politics: she is executive editor of The Polar Journal and author of a new monograph China as a Polar Great Power. She has written four monographs, edited six books, and authored more than forty scholarly papers on a range of issues including China’s Arctic and Antarctic interests, China’s modern propaganda system, New Zealand - China relations, New Zealand foreign policy, and foreigner-management in China. 

Peter Cai is a Nonresident Fellow at the Lowy Institute. Previously he was a journalist with The AustralianBusiness SpectatorThe Age and The Sydney Morning Herald, covering business and economic news. Prior to becoming a journalist, Peter was at the Australian Treasury where he worked in the Foreign Investment Review Board Secretariat, focusing largely on state-owned enterprises and sovereign wealth fund investment policy. Peter has a master’s degree from Oxford University and holds undergraduate degrees from the University of Adelaide. Peter is currently Group Chief Advisor with Virgin Australia.
