World Human Rights Day with Foreign Minister Julie Bishop

World Human Rights Day with Foreign Minister Julie Bishop

Mon, 12 December 2016
Sydney

Australia has long been a proponent of international efforts to advance the cause of human rights. This is all the more important at a time when democracy and human rights have suffered serious setbacks in many parts of the world.

Australian Foreign Minister the Hon. Julie Bishop MP will visit the Lowy Institute for World Human Rights Day, which commemorates the date that the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. The Minister will speak about Australia’s candidacy for the UN Human Rights Council in 2018-2020.

Ms Bishop was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1998. In September 2013, she was sworn in as Australia’s first female Foreign Minister. She has previously served as a Cabinet Minister in the Howard Government, including as Minister for Education, Science and Training, and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for Women’s Issues. She has also served on various parliamentary and policy committees, including as Chair of the Joint Standing Committee on Treaties.
