Finalists announcement - 2023 Lowy Institute Media Award
The Lowy Institute is pleased to announce the shortlisted finalists for the 2023 Lowy Institute Media Award. The award recognises excellence in coverage of international affairs by Australian journalists and media outlets.
“Australia needs eyes on the world, which means Australian journalists on the international beat,” said Dr Michael Fullilove, Executive Director of the Lowy Institute. “This award seeks to recognise the investment of Australian media institutions in international coverage, and to encourage journalists to continue striving to inform and educate Australians about the world.”
On this year’s judging panel are broadcaster and journalist Fran Kelly, Australia correspondent for The Washington Post Michael Miller, former journalist and Australian British Chamber of Commerce CEO Ticky Fullerton and Lowy Institute Board member Mark Ryan, as well as Dr Michael Fullilove.
The finalists are:
- Kate Geraghty and Anthony Galloway for their work reporting on the conflict in Ukraine across two series of articles for The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age;
- Stephen Rice of The Australian for a series of reports about Cambodian political influence in Australia;
- Andrew Tillett for his reporting on defence procurement and operations in his role as Foreign Affairs and Defence correspondent for the Australian Financial Review; and
- Natalie Whiting for her work as Papua New Guinea correspondent for ABC News covering issues including environmental threats, international security, social and community safety, and domestic politics.
The Lowy Institute Media Award has been presented each year since 2013 to recognise coverage by Australian journalists that has deepened the knowledge of, or broadened discussion of, international affairs. The winner of the 2023 Lowy Institute Media Award will be announced on Thursday 28 September. In addition to the award and a distinctive trophy by Dinosaur Designs, the winner receives a prize of AU$20,000.
