Who Will Rule Myanmar?

In this article for Foreign Affairs following Myanmar's historic elections in November 2015, Aaron L. Connelly argues that before Aung San Suu Kyi and the National League for Democracy can begin to set about the difficult task of meeting voters' extremely high expectations, they will need to renegotiate their relationship with the military. It is in the international community's interest that the two sides form a working relationship — despite the military's history of repression — because international pressure on Myanmar to reach a peace deal with ethnic armed groups and to soothe ethnic tensions will only work if neither side is trying to undercut the other's nationalist credentials.
